Last month, for Family Home Evening (on Feb. 9, 2009 to be exact), we read part of the Book of Esther from the Bible in preparation for our stake musical: Esther and the King. We also researched the Jewish traditions, continued today, on the internet. We learned of the yearly celebration of the Jewish holiday: Purim, which is a festival that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people of the ancient Persian Empire from Haman's plot to annihilate them (Dan played the part of Haman in the musical and I, Merrie Kay, played the part of his conspiring wife, Zeresh). During this festival, the Jewish people serve what is known as Hamantashen, otherwise known as Haman Ears. So, of course, we decided to make some for our FHE treat and try them out. It's kind of a mince meat fruit filling inside a pastry not entirely unlike sugar cookies - quite tasty, actually. We shared some with the directors of the musical - they were quite entertained. So, enjoy them with us!
